A cherry is the fruit of many plants of the genus Prunus, and is a fleshy drupe (stone fruit).
Commercial cherries are obtained from cultivars of several species, such as the sweet Prunus avium and the sour Prunus cerasus.
Cherries are well known for their red colour which can be more or less intense, according to the variety.
Area of production and availability.
In Oegema we commercialize the sweet cherries, produced both in Spain and Italy, which are two of the three major commercial cherry orchards in Europe.
In Italy, our best producers are located in the regions of Calabria and Apuliae or in the North, where the colder temperature helps the production of bloom and fruit.
Cherries have a short growing season and can grow in most temperate latitudes. Cherries blossom in April (in the Northern Hemisphere) and the peak season for the cherry harvest can go from Mai to mid-July.
Our cherries are mostly commercialized in little punnets or carry bags but available also loose in little cardboard boxes.
